Check event calendar for dates.
This popular bike route is for strong intermediate to advanced skaters. Beginning at Columbus Circle, our 27-mile skate goes uptown through Manhattan via Riverside Drive and over the GWB. From the GWB we skate along Hudson Terrace until we reach Route 9W. We take Route 9W to Piermont Avenue which takes us along the scenic waterfront straight into Nyack. Single file signs warn you of fines, and they mean it, so be alert. Once in Nyack, we lunch at the Runcible Spoon (a skate friendly restaurant with tables outside).
We return via the 9 or 9A bus ($6-$7) which, depending on the route, either leaves you at the GWB bus terminal on the New York side or at the bridge plaza on the New Jersey side. When the bus terminates on the New Jersey side, we skate over the GWB back to New York. In New York, we catch the A-train back to Columbus Circle. Of course, skating back from Nyack is an option for a total of 54 miles roundtrip.
The steepest uphill is in Manhattan at Riverside Drive and 165th Street. The most challenging downhills are just beyond the state line and are not for the faint of heart. Seriously! They are long and, at times, twisty and blind. One ends at an intersection and, if the traffic light is against you, you must be prepared to stop (quite a feat at 30+mph). Helmets and wrist guards required, all other protective gear is highly recommended. Bring water as there are not many opportunities along the way to purchase refreshments or to use restrooms.
Riverside Bike/Skate This is not an Empire event.
Last Saturday of every month (spring through late summer), 10:00 pm at Columbus Circle.
One third Central Park, one third street, one third along the river. Help promote greenways in our city and see the beautiful river views. For advanced skaters. For more information see the Times Up! web site.
Tuesday Night Skate
For more information see the Tuesday Night Skate page.
Wednesday Night Skate This is not an Empire event.
Every Wednesday night (April through Halloween only), 8:00 pm, SOUTH side of Union Square Park (14th Street between Broadway and Park Ave South).
Although Empire isn't affiliated with the Wednesday Night Skate, you can join them for an approximately two-hour tour of midtown, downtown, and the Village. See their web site for additional information.
Most skating events are canceled in the event of rain, or if the ground is wet.
To determine which events are suitable for you, look at the skating level they are recommended for:
SMS meets every Sunday morning at 11 AM at Columbus Circle unless otherwise noted on the Empire Calendar. Year round.
This skate is for anyone who feels comfortable enough to skate in the street at any level. There will be a lead, a sweep and a "floater", so no one will go unnoticed and no one will get left behind. We will meet every Sunday, at 11:00am at Columbus Circle. If you would like to bring a friend or family member who is not a member of Empire, we welcome them with open arms, they just need to sign a waiver. Helmets and wrist guards required, all other protective gear recommended.
SPECIAL NOTE to SMS:
Currently SMS runs on an irregular basis. Please check our website, calendar and email for the most updated schedule.
