Recreational skating is by far the most popular form of skating among our members,
and we organize and lead regular group skates and other rec events. This includes
group day skates, night skates, and weekend skate trips in and around NYC and the
surrounding tri-state area. (Check out our
calendar for a complete schedule of
From late spring to early autumn, we organize a skate just about every weekend. Half-day or day skates usually start from Columbus Circle, at the southwest corner of Central Park, and travel anywhere from 10 to 40 miles (the average is about 15 miles). Terrain is usually suitable for intermediate skaters, although some events may require more advanced skills.
Popular city destinations include Battery Park, The Cloisters, Roosevelt Island, Randalls/Wards Island, Coney Island, Rockaway, Flushing Meadows/Corona Park, and Little Neck Bay. Each summer also includes short train trips to scenic areas in Long Island, Westchester, and Connecticut where we strap on our skates and enjoy a few hours of skating away from city traffic.
Our weekend trips take us to nearby metropolises such as Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, DC, where we join local skate clubs for a tour of their city and its sights.
Sunday Morning Skate (SMS) meets every Sunday morning (year round) at 11 AM at Columbus Circle unless otherwise noted on the Empire Calendar. This skate is for anyone who feels comfortable enough to skate in the street at any level.
Please note that SMS is currently in recess and runs on an irregular basis. Please check the calendar for the most recent information before you come out.
More experienced skaters are invited to join the Tuesday Night Skate (TNS), New York's oldest night skate, every Tuesday at 8:00 PM, year-round.
In the winter, when the ground is too snowy/icy for skating, we organize ski/snowboard/snow skate trips to nearby resorts. If you've never experienced snow skating, you're really missing something!
Please visit our EVENTS section for more information about organized group skates.
